Finding Craven
The following is an excerpt from a screenplay series that I'm writing based on a short story that my mother, Patricia Marco, wrote called "Sixty Seconds"
GRANDMA JUNE
None of this is making sense. A serial killer taking children and adults? It can’t be. And no bodies have been found yet? (Dad shakes his head no) It’s been a few weeks since I saw nice Mr. Craven down the hall. I’m worried it’s getting too close to home.
MOM
It’s probably nothing, Mom. After lunch I’ll go knock on his door and see if he’s home.
GRANDMA JUNE
What about Nick? How’s he doing with Marybeth disappearing? He has such a crush on her. It has to be affecting him.
MOM
He’s doing OK. He’s a little angry and determined to find her himself. It’s so sad. It’s like she’s part of the family, always around. My gosh, it’s been almost a month now.
DAD
It’s crazy. People are talking about aliens taking everyone. And I can’t say that its not! It makes the most sense. It’s just...
Dad’s cell phone rings. He answers it and walks through the dinning room to talk and stops in the living room. Nick listens from the dinning room table where he’s doing his homework.
DAD (CONT’D)
This is Dave. What did you find? Really? (He looks toward Nick) Where? Are you still there? Make sure nothing is moved. I’ll be right there.
Dad walks back into the kitchen. Nick follows but doesn’t go in. He waits just outside the kitchen, close enough to hear.
MOM
Everything OK?
DAD
They found Marybeth’s bookbag over by the creek. I have to go and check things out. I’m sorry I’m going to miss the birthday party. I’ll be back as soon...
Nick bolts out from the doorway. He’s excited.
NICK
Dad, I want to go too! I can help. She’s MY friend. I have to go!
DAD
Nick, we can’t keep going over this, buddy. I know you want to help. I know you want to be a detective. You’re too young to be a detective. I’m sorry Nick.
NICK
But Dad..
DAD
No Nick. You’re too young. Start small and work your way up from there. Stay here and protect Grandma June, Mom and Tim.
NICK
From what???!!! What’s going to happen at Grandma’s apartment?
